2017-2020 Contract Negotiations Updates
The Negotiating Committee (NC) wishes all of you a very happy holiday season! While many of us will be celebrating remotely with family and friends, it is still a time to celebrate all the wonderful people in our lives and count our blessings. And what celebration would be complete without the Final Draft of our AFA Contract!? For months, the NC has been hard at work putting the final product together. [...]
As the year draws to a close, we are pleased to say that we are very close to finalizing and distributing the new contract. The work that remains is tying up the loose ends that were created by the many changes made to the agreement during negotiations. In addition, throughout the process of finalizing the contract, language was changed to make it clearer for everyone and to better reflect both [...]
The Negotiating Committee (NC) would like to update you on what we have been working on these last couple of months. Everyone’s focus has been on keeping our company alive. To address flexibility for Flight attendants and reduce headcount, we negotiated the COVID-19 Letter of Agreement, and subsequent amendments. Then the VEOP was finalized, giving those near [...]

As part of the ongoing contract implementation process, we will soon be switching over to the new non-published charter notification and award process that we were able to improve during negotiations. We have been informed by the company that they have been looking to secure charter flights as a way of capturing additional revenue during this period of reduced scheduled flying. [...]
We are pleased to announce that over the past two weeks we’ve begun to make a shift towards the finalization of the language of our new contract. With most new contracts there are at least two major components of transitioning to a new agreement: one is the implementation of the new provisions of the agreement and the other is finalizing the language in the agreement (the book) itself [...]
We are pleased to report that we continue to make progress on implementation of the negotiated changes to our Contract. All pay provisions have been implemented and “retro” on those items has been paid. Items that require programming (e.g. reserve self-assignment, some trading provisions, average minimum daily guarantee) will take months to get programmed and tested prior to implementation [...]
This is a friendly reminder to please join us tomorrow, May 29, @ 1000 HST for a Zoom meeting about the contract implementation. We will be hosting a two-hour meeting focused on the implementation schedule for contract provisions. Please see the attached, updated implementation table we will be using for the meeting. In order to facilitate the meeting structure, please review the list and email [...]
Your AFA Negotiating Committee has been working with the company on the anticipated implementation schedule for the various provisions of the tentative agreement, now that it has been ratified. The process is complicated, and we hold daily meetings with the NC and weekly meetings with all the company stakeholders for each item. Oftentimes, we have small group meetings with management [...]
The Negotiating Committee continues to meet daily in electronic Zoom meetings, coordinating across 6 hours of time difference. We also have had a number of meetings with management in this fashion. This method of meeting has its limitations. Ideally, we would be meeting in the same room marking up our individual documents while having a thoughtful discussion about the work in front of [...]
Late this afternoon we confirmed that the Ratification Bonus payments were taxed at the supplemental rate of 22% instead of the normal rate for each Flight Attendant. The company apologized for the error and did not catch the issue until they went through to check on the paychecks.
Many of the new provisions in our new Contract will require software changes, coordination with outside vendors, education of crew schedulers, and new procedures put into place for different company departments. It is a complicated process and we are pleased to report that the company is working with us as we sort through everything that must be implemented. We are focusing on the [...]

The deadline to apply for a leave under the terms of the COVID-19 Temporary Contract Modifications Letter of Agreement (the LOA), is Wednesday, April 22nd, at 1500 HST. For those of you who are considering taking a leave of absence under the terms of the LOA, here are a few reminders and clarifications: COVID-19 Leave Reminders: The company has not provided the number [...]
We’ve just wrapped up our week of virtual meetings among ourselves and with the company regarding the implementation and integration of our new contract. We’ve made some progress on both fronts, though we hope to be able to pick up the pace of both processes in the coming weeks. One significant change to report is that our new wage rates will be in effect for our May 7th paychecks! [...]
Over the past few days, we met with the company to discuss issues surrounding the Ratification Bonus payments. When we reached a Tentative Agreement with the company last month, one of their big concerns was paying the $19.5M Ratification Bonus all at once. Their proposal was to spread the payments over a year in 24 (twice-monthly) payments. Since then our discussions have revealed [...]
Now that the Tentative Agreement has been ratified we have started working with the company on an implementation schedule for the various provisions of our new contract. Certain provisions have started immediately while other provisions may take some time to begin because of programming requirements or other considerations. For many of us, two of the items of immediate concern [...]
